I thought that I would review some of the races from last year. The OBRA Piece of Cake is coming up 3/30/08. I will not go this year despite the very flat course and well organized venue - abundant and clean "Honey Buckets".
Last year I got shelled off the pack (cat 4) halfway through the race. I was sitting up tossing back a gel pack and watched the head of the race pick up and move away down the straight stretch along the Columbia (key word= windy). I picked up other stragglers along the way and had a great training ride. I wish that I could go back this year. Instead I will race at Sequim #2.
What I did wrong last year: I wasted energy getting to the front of the pack, expended even more energy on the front, then got hung out to dry - I could not get a wheel. I ended up back at the back and decided to replenish and rest, that's when things really picked up. I was too far back. I kept bridging smaller groups that could not catch the head of the race. I did not know anyone in the race.
What I would do differently: Race with teammates. Line-up early to start toward the front. Work with riders to bridge gaps. Train harder to develop base speed to maintain and train harder to develop dynamic power to react more quickly to a break.
